I read with a heavy heart recent unfortunate incident in which a young Medical Doctor committed suicide in Nigeria. This provoked some intellectual and emotional reactions on WhatsApp’s forum that am part of.
It is an unfortunate incident for anyone to want to take his or her life. However, with global economic recession, incessant media bad news and increasing difficulty with various life events, we are seeing more suicide cases across all age groups.
There is no doubt that more needs to be done in terms of social, economic and personal life event support.
It is difficult to judge the trigger zone for any individual but the honest truth is anybody can be tempted if sufficiently stressed. Though I’m not a qualified psychiatrist, while major depression may be a factor in some suicide cases. Majority of successful suicide cases are often in otherwise normal individuals and surprisingly in some recovering depressive individuals.
Let me say simply that suicide is an intense emotional reaction to major life event or stress to which an individual sees no rational way out-my view.
Now this discussion may not cover those who are terminally ill and under medical supervision or care.
I’ll like to address out of the blue cases that shock most of us. Let me say that the will to live is one of the strongest instinct in any human being. So for an individual to choose to take his or her life is not something to be laughed at.
We need to be sensitive to each other and be our brother’s keeper.
Why say “never say never?” This is to highlight that anybody can be susceptible and a victim.
Samson in the Old Testament went down in history as the first suicide case and Judas Iscariot in the New Testament after he betrayed Jesus.
A lot of people do not understand suicide and often most of us tend to think that it is a coward or stupid act. Nothing can be more far from the truth.
Interestingly suicide like divorce is not for the faint hearted!
It is not just merely a notion of mental instability but a potential lethal reaction when all hope is lost.
Samson’s very existence was threatened when he lost all his power and of course with humiliations from his adversaries. He begged God for final show of power which took his life. We could debate on why God allowed this; perhaps for a discussion on another essay.
Judas was filled with such remorse and guilt that he saw no way forward. If he had not committed suicide, could he have been forgiven? Again beyond the scope of this write up.
When unfamiliar terrain takes us to a hopeless frontier, it is inevitable that our survival may be threatened.
Robin Williams’ suicide shocked the world, a reminder that nobody is exempt.
If you’ve never had any situation or event to make you consider suicide, I sincerely pray for you that may your life continue to be sweet.
However, let’s pray for those who might be experiencing unusual difficulties in their lives that the God of mercy will answer their prayers and restore their hope.
